About the Book:
Katie focuses her mind, trying to keep another anxiety attack at bay. The victim’s long brown hair is slick and wet, her body rigid in the grass. She looks more like a mannequin than the woman Katie had spoken with only yesterday, the woman she had promised to protect…When a cold, naked body is discovered by a couple on a jog through the lush woodlands of Pine
Valley, California, new recruit Detective Katie Scott is stunned to discover the victim is Amanda Payton – a much-loved local nurse and the woman at the heart of an unsolved case she’s been investigating whilst getting a grip on her crippling PTSD.
Weeks earlier, Amanda had run, battered and bruised, out into the headlights of a passing patrol car. She claimed to have just escaped a kidnapping, but with no strong evidence, the case went cold. The Pine Valley police made a fatal mistake…
Katie is certain the marks on Amanda’s wrists complete a pattern of women being taken, held captive and then showing up dead in remote locations around Pine Valley – and she won’t let someone die on her watch again.
But then a beautiful office worker with a link to the hospital where Amanda worked goes missing. With only days before the next body is due to show up, can Katie make amends for her past by saving this innocent life?
Totally gripping crime fiction for fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Caine and Melinda Leigh. Nothing will prepare you for this nail-biting roller-coaster ride…

Thank you for your time in
answering our questions about getting published. Let’s begin by having
you explain to us why you decided to become an author and pen this book?
Jennifer Chase: I’ve loved to write for as long
as I can remember. Books have been a prominent part of my life—both reading and
writing. I wrote my first novel, Compulsion, in 2009 and it’s been full speed
ahead ever since then. I’ve written a few other series, but Her Last Whisper is
from the Detective Katie Scott crime series. This book is the second in the
series (also can be standalone) and it’s been a storyline that I’ve wanted to
write for some time The premise is about a young woman coming home from the
army after two tours in Afghanistan as a military K9 handler. She has two
years’ experience as patrol police officer and doesn’t know if she wants to
return to being a police officer. Circumstances dictate that is exactly where
she should be, and she becomes a police detective heading up the cold case
unit.
Is this your first book?
Jennifer: No, this is my twelfth
completed novel to date. I have an Emily Stone Thriller series where she is a
vigilante detective chasing serial killers. There is also the Chip Palmer
Forensic Mysteries and a California K9 Series.
With this particular book, Her
Last Whisper, how did you publish – traditional, small press, Indie, etc. – and
why did you choose this method?
Jennifer: I decided to publish with
Bookouture for three books in the series. I had been an independent author, but
I had never written off the possibility of publishing with a traditional type
of publisher. I just wasn’t actively seeking publication, but they had
approached me and we talked about it. I pitched this series and the rest fell
into place.
Can you tell us a little
about your publishing journey? The pros
and cons?
Jennifer: I had always been an indie
author, which can be intimidating but I have had success in sales and have won
numerous book awards. The pros are that you are your own boss and you make all
the decisions: cover, release, what to edit, promotions, etc. The cons are the
fact that all of these things take away from writing. It can be overwhelming.
With a publisher, they handle the cover, editing, and the promotion and
marketing aspects. All of this allows me to breathe.
What lessons do you feel you
learned about your particular publishing journey and about the publishing
industry as a whole?
Jennifer: I’ve heard from many authors
who had experience with traditional publishers who love it and others who went
independent. The publishing industry is like any type of industry—you have to
find the right one that works with you and your books. This can be a difficult
process, but I feel, that if any publisher offers a writer a contract it
doesn’t mean it’s the right one. Choose your options wisely.
Would you recommend this
method of publishing to other authors?
Jennifer: Absolutely. However, I caution,
you really need to do your homework to find out if this relationship is the
right one for you.
What’s the best advice you
can give to aspiring authors?
Jennifer: Ask yourself: can you handle
the writing process all the way through editing and promotion. It’s difficult,
but it’s well worth it. And write, write, and keep writing to be the best you
can. Keep your chin up with bad reviews and those people who don’t support your
work because there are those that will. Happy writing!
